Em
fevereiro deste ano, o departamento de Química da UFSC recebeu
o francês Redouane Borsali - um
professor e e pesquisador do LABORATOIRE DE CHIMIE DES POLYMERES
ORGANIQUES, na Bordeaux University. Aqui, além de participar
de intensas discussões com outros pesquisadores, de nosso departamento,
nos presenteou com um excelente curso sobre Light Scattering (Espalhamento
de Luz). Borsali falou, também, com o QMCWEB.

Why did you decide to work with scattering techniques?
IN FACT I DIDN'T DECIDE TO WORK ON SCATTERING TECHNIQUES; BUT I HAD
A GREAT OPPORTUNITY AND CHANCE, AND HOPE WILL STILL BE THE CASE, TO
WORK WITH WORLKNOWN EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF SCATTERING SINCE MY PhD
THESIS AT STRASBOURG (France), POST-DOC IN MAINZ (Germany), IBM (San
Jose, CA, USA) and STANFORD UNIVERSITY (CA, USA)

What is, in fact, light, x-ray and neutron scattering?

THE
" MAIN RELATIONSHIP " IS THE WAVELENGTH FOR VISIBLE LIGHT,
WE USE GENERALLY LASERS FOR NEUTRONS, WE USE THOSE LARGE FACILITIES
(NUCLEAR REACTORS) SUCH AS THE ONES AT THE ILL (INSTITUT LAUE LANGEVIN,
GRENOBLE), NIST (WASHINGTON, USA), ETC. FOR X-RAYS, WE USE SYNCHROTRON
RADIATION (ESRF, GRENOBLE) AND FOR THE BRAZILIAN SCIENTISTS (CAMPINAS
SYNCHROTRON) AND THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR BRAZIL. THE
DIFFERENCE IS THE PROBING SCALE USING LIGHT SCATTERING, WE HAVE
ACCESS TO MACROSCOPIC STRUCTURE USING X-RAYS, WE HAVE ACCESS TO
LOCAL INFORMATION USING NEUTRONS, WE COULD HAVE ACCESS TO SELECTED
LOCAL INFORMATION TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE DEUTERIATION (EXCHANGING
HYDROGEN BY DEUTERIUM)

MOLECULAR
WEIGHT, SIZE, INTERACTIONS, SHAPE OF THE PARTICLE, RELAXATION TIMES,
DIFFUSION COEFFICIENTS, MOBILITY, INTERNAL MODE OF RELAXATION, KINETICS
OF MEASURABLE TRANSITIONS. IN ANOTHER WORDS, WE COULD HAVE ACCESS
TO THE STRUCTURE AND TO THE DYNAMICS OF THE INVESTIGATED MATERIAL
(SOLUTIONS, GELS OR METS)

How is your lab? Where the money comes from?
I HAVE A CHANCE TO BE IN A FAMEOUS CNRS LABORATORY AT BORDEAUX :
THE LCPO (LABORATOIRE DE CHIMIE DES POLYMERES ORGANIQUES) IS VERY
WELL-KNOWN THROUGH ITS EXCELLENT POLYMLER CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT.
I JOINED VERY RECENTLY THIS CENTER OF RESEARCH TO LEAD THE POLYMER
PHYSICAL-CHEMISTRY GROUP. THE ATMOSPHERE OF WORK IN OUR GROUP IS
RATHER PLEASANT AND DYNAMIC. AS FOR THE FINANCIAL SUPPORTS IT IS
COMING FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES (MAINLY FROM CNRS AND INDUSTRIES)

What do you think about Brazil? What are the best and what are the
worse things in this country?
I
HAVE A LOT OF THINGS TO SAY ABOUT BRAZIL BUT WILL LIMIT MYSELF TO
SOME KEYSTONES. IT WAS IN FEBRUARY 1993 THAT I VISITED FOR THE FIRST
TIME BRAZIL. I HAD REALLY ENJOYED MY STAY AND FOUND A VERY NICE
AND WARMFULL WELCOME FROM ALL THE PERSONS I'VE MET THAT PERIOD AND
SINCE. IN 1994, I WAS INVITED BY CAPES (THROUGH PROFa. CLARA BICA
FROM PORTO ALEGRE UNIVERSITY, WHO I THANK A LOT) TO GIVE LECTURES
IN 6 BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITIES : RIO, SAO CARLOS, SAO PAOLO, PORTO
ALEGRE, SANTA MARIA AND BELO HORIZONTE. IT WAS A GREAT TIME MEETING
ALL THESE VERY GOOD STUDENTS AND BRILLIANT BRAZILIAN SCIENTISTS.
SINCE THEN, I REGULARLY COME TO BRAZIL FOR INTERNATIONAL MEETINGS,
SUCH AS THE ONES ORGANIZED IN GRAMADO-1996, CANELA-1998, SAN PEDRO-2000,
AS WELL AS SEMINARS I HAVE GIVEN IN SAO CARLOS, SAO PAOLO, PETROBRAZ-RIO,
FLORIANOPOLIS, DURING THESE PERIOD OF MEETINGS ETC. I MUST ALSO
SAY THAT DURING MY FREQUENTLY VISITS TO BRAZIL, I MET VERY GOOD
STUDENTS WHO CAME TO MY GROUP TO EITHEIR PREPARE THEIR PHD OR AS
POST-DOCS (THIS IS THE CASE OF MARCOS VILLETTI, MIRIAM DE SOUZA,
CLARA BICA)
AND OTHERS WHO CAME FOR SHORT VISITS. AND HOPEFULLY SOON JANAINA
FROM FLORIANOPOLIS FOR HER PHD THESIS. I CAN¹T SAY WORSE THINGS
AGAIN BRAZIL. MY WIFE WHO IS BRAZILIAN WILL NOT APPRECIATE, AS SHE
LOVES HER COUNTRY BRAZIL BETTER THAN I DO. I MUST SAY THAT ALL THE
BRAZILIANS I KNOW LOVE BRAZIL AND THAT IS GREAT, AND TO BE HONEST
THERE IS NO THAT WORSE THINGS TO SAY...AS COMPARED TO GREAT THINGS...
I WOULD
RATHER SAY THAT I REALLY APPRECIATED MY LAST TRIP TO FLORIANOPOLIS,
I THANK PROF. VALDIR SOLDI FOR HIS INVITATION. I HAD A CHANCE TO

WELL IN FACT IT IS NOT A TOUGH QUESTION, I CAN¹T GIVE A NUMBER
TO UFSC CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT OF FLORIANOPOLIS BUT WILL RATHER SAY
THAT I HAVE REALLY SEEN, NOT ONLY IN FLORIANOPOLIS BUT IN MOST UNIVERSITIES
I HAVE VISITED IN BRAZIL, DYNAMIC PROFESSORS AS WELL AS GOOD STUDENTS,
ALL OF THEM, STICKING ON THEIR MAIN OBJECTIVES IN SPITE OF NON-IDEAL
CONDITIONS OF WORK AS COMPARED TO EUROPE OR TO THE USA. IT IS THIS
QUALITY THAT MAKES ME VERY GLAD TO COLLABORATE AND HELP AS MUCH
AS I COULD BRAZILIAN STUDENTS AND SCIENTISTS.

you planning to come back to Brazil?
YES, I WILL BE AGAIN TO BRAZIL IN MAY 2000 FOR THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL
MEETING ISNAPOL2000 SAN PEDRO AS WELL AS AT SAO CARLOS AND
CURITIBA FOR SEMINARS. I
WISH THIS WILL NOT BE THE LAST TIME.

>Poeira
interestrelar analizada pela missão STARDUST
Lançada em fevereiro do ano passado, a nave Stardust carrega
um espectrômetro de massa - o CIDA, Cometary and Interstellar
Dust Analyzer. A nave já esta investigando as partículas
de poeira que existem no espaço sideral. A surpresa é
que estas partículas são orgânicas, parecidas
com o alcatrão. "They rather resemble tar-like substances,"
disseram Dr. Franz R. Krueger e Dr. Jochen Kissel do Max Planck
Institute, no último exemplar de uma revista alemão
de astronomia. "What is surprising, is that there was the organic
component with no mineral component," explica Don Brownlee, principal
cientista da Missão Stardust, e professor de astronomia na
University of Washington, em Seattle.
>Doença da Vaca Louca ataca humanos
Até agora, 53 pessoas já morreram de Creutzfeld
Jacob Disease, CJD, uma variante da doença da vaca louca
que atinge os humanos. Mas os médicos britânicos estão
otimistas quanto à possibilidade de uma epidemia, pois em
mais de 3000 pessoas, vizinhas das vítimas fatais de CJD,
o vírus causador da moléstia estava ausente. A doença,
que causa a destruição das células cerebrais,
pode ser causada pela ingestão de carne infectada com BSE,
ou seja, carne de Vaca Louca. O Governo britânico está
gastando 75 milhões de dólares, anualmente, na pesquisa
de CJD e BSE.
>Cerveja
faz bem para a saúde
Precisa de uma boa razão para beber? Pesquisadores da TNO
Nutrition and Food Reasearch Institute, na Noruega, descobriram
que, de fato, a cerveja faz bem para você. Na bebida, existe
uma vitamina conhecida como B6, que previne a acumulação
de homocisteína - um metabólito de amino-ácido
e causador de doenças cardiovasculares. No estudo, os pesquisadores
utilizaram 111 homens saudáveis que beberam cerveja, vinho
tinto, bebidas destiladas e água. O nível sanguíneo
de vitamina B6 subiu 30%, em 1 semana, naqueles que beberam cerveja.
>Um
chip em cada jogador
Trakus Inc., uma empresa de tecnologia afiliada da MIT, estará
colocando um microchip em cada um dos capacetes dos jogadores da
NFL, na temporada de 2001. A informação enviada por
estes microchips será processada por computadores sintonizados
e poderá mudar completamente a forma com que assistimos esportes
pela TV, além de, possivelmente, revolucionar os próprios
esportes. "The computers talk amongst themselves," diz o
chefe executivo da Trakus, Eric Spitz. "They say, 'I just
heard from player number 54 at one o'clock in two picoseconds [trillioneths
of seconds]' and the other guy says, 'Well he arrived at my tower
at one o'clock in five picoseconds.' The other guy says, 'He arrived
at my tower at one o'clock in nine picoseconds." Os computadores
das torres serão capazes de medir as velocidades, aceleração,
impacto, distâncias, enfim, tudo sobre o movimento de cada
um dos jogadores em campo. Estas informações poderão
ser dispostas, na TV, sob a forma de gráficos ou, na internet,
de maneira interativa. Os técnicos também poderão
se utilizar deste serviço para analizar detalhadamente a
movimentação de cada um dos jogadores.
